Butch Haynes (Costner), a hardened criminal serving 40 years for armed robbery, has just escaped from prison in Texas taking a seven year old boy, Philip Perry (T.J. Lowther) Hostage.
He is pursued by Texas Ranger Red Garnett (Eastwood) and a team of deputies. Red had arrested a youthful Haynes for his first offence and had recommended a prison sentence as he thought it would straighten him out. However, this proved to be a mistake, as Haynes became a career criminal behind bars.
The relationship between Haynes and the boy almost becomes one of father and son as the pair start to live a fantasy life on the road, but Red is determined to enforce the law and catch his man. |
